SUMMARY:The Grand Fatilla - No Cover 10pm
DESCRIPTION:ALCHEMIST\n\n8/23/2009 10:00 PM at Grand Fatilla\n435 Sout
h Huntington Avenue, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts 02130\nCost: Always
Free\n\nGrand Fatilla began as an informal trio when Club d’Elf bass
ist Mike Rivard, electric mandolinist Matt Glover and accordionist Rob
erto Cassan got together to explore their mutual love for folk music f
rom all over the world, especially the styles born out of the gypsy di
aspora. Occasionally gigging around Boston/Cambridge when schedules wi
th their other bands allowed, the trio became a quartet with the addit
ion of percussionist and singer Fabio Pirozzolo, and Grand Fatilla was
born. A Monday night residency at Cambridge’s Atwoods Tavern has ge
nerated a considerable buzz, as enthusiastic audiences embrace their p
assionate take on Modern Global Music. Like an iPod on shuffle the gro
up jumps from Argentine Tangos to Italian Tarantellas...from Turkish s
acred Sufi songs to Irish reels...Moroccan trance to Bulgarian dance m
usic, all performed with an emphasis on improvisational group interpla
y and playful spontaneity. In this age of heightened global consciousn
ess the repertoire that Grand Fatilla performs acknowledges and pays h
omage to the idea that it is indeed One World that we all live in, and
the music of diverse cultures enriches us all. Each member of the ban
d brings a distinct flavor and area of expertise in different World mu
sics to the collective sound: Cassan and Pirozzolo both hail from Ital
y and play locally with the Italian folk group Newpoli, and both have
also intensely explored various Balkan musics; Glover came to Boston f
rom his native Newfoundland where he absorbed the Celtic influences an
d fiddle music of that area, as well as studying the South Indian styl
ings of mandolinist U. Srinivas. Rivard, who is also a member of local
Indian-jazz group Natraj, has a passion for North African music, espe
cially Berber and Gnawa music from Morocco, leading him to study the S
intir, which is a 3-stringed bass lute used by the Gnawa in their cere
monies. The group has a special love for Brazilian composer Hermeto Pa
scoal, often performing his beautiful composition \"Little Church\" (w
hich they first heard on Miles Davis’s Live/Evil album), as well as
a deep affinity for Argentine Astor Piazzolla and his Tango compositio
ns. Original compositions by the band members inspired by the folk and
world music influences they share round out the group’s repertoire.
