The church has been a presence on the corner of Eliot, Centre and South Streets since 1769. The current Sanctuary dates from 1854, and the Parish Hall from the 1880’s. Janna, until last June when she retired to finish graduate work in music therapy, was the long-time vocal soloist and occasional pianist/harpist at First Church and has performed in many a service or concert in both the Parish Hall and Sanctuary. Her own recently formed Celtic and originals ensemble, Heart Soul Voice, was the opener for Fellswater last year at the Soirée. Says Janna, “The acoustics in the parish hall, built in the 1880’s, are nothing short of miraculous. Whoever designed it was a genius. I’ve stood in the furthest corner and heard the quietest notes of John Muratore’s guitar clear as a bell. When I’ve performed in an acappella group on the stage, I could hear each other singer’s timbre and how it blended with mine. The space itself is just beautiful and welcoming as well. This is why I’m inspired to have more music performed here as a benefit to the artists, to the church, and to our community. And more folks coming in to the space means greater awareness of the good work the church does via its food pantry and other social justice activities.”

I am forwarding you the e-mail below on behalf of Molly Baskette, Reverend at the First Church of Somerville. Molly's family is currently giving emergency shelter to Junior, a 13-year-old boy from Haiti, and they are desperately seeking someone who will offer a foster home or a permanent home for him. Due to the timeframe in which he needs to be placed, the family should be DCF-certified. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please reach out to Molly or Owen Robinson from Partners in Health, numbers listed below.

Washington – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is seeking nominations for participants in the Agency’s Youth Preparedness Council (YPC).

The Youth Preparedness Council provides an opportunity for young leaders to serve as a member of a distinguished national council; to complete a youth preparedness project of their choosing; to learn about youth disaster preparedness from the leadership at FEMA and other national organizations dedicated to youth preparedness; to voice their opinions, experiences, and share innovative ideas and solutions; and to participate in the Youth Preparedness Council Summit where the council meets with emergency management leadership to discuss steps to strengthen the nation’s resiliency against all types of disasters.

Participants are expected to represent the youth perspective on emergency preparedness and relay information within their communities. Each council member is expected to develop and complete one preparedness-related project specific to his/her region and interests. In addition to attending the Summit in the summer of 2013, council members will potentially participate in national, regional, state, tribal and local preparedness meetings and present their work. It is expected that members will meet with FEMA on a regular basis via conference call to provide ongoing input on strategies, initiatives and projects throughout the duration of their term.

Anyone between the ages of 12 and 17, who is engaged in individual and community preparedness, is encouraged to apply or be nominated to serve on the Youth Preparedness Council. An individual may apply on his/her own behalf, or can be nominated by an adult familiar with his/her youth preparedness activities. Individuals interested in applying must submit a completed application form, a narrative, and a letter of recommendation. The letter of recommendation can be from any adult, including a parent, guardian, community first responder, or teacher. Applications that do not include a letter of recommendation will not be reviewed. Individuals interested in nominating a young leader to the council should complete the application form and narrative, but a letter of recommendation is not mandatory. Specific information about completing and submitting the application and attachments can be found on the application.

All applications and supporting materials must be received no later than 11:59 E.D.T. on April 19, 2013 in order to be eligible.

Council members will be selected based on vacancies and announced in May 2013. Once selected, members serve on the Council for one year, with the option to extend for an additional year, based on a formal request by FEMA.

For more information about the Youth Preparedness Council and FEMA’s work on youth preparedness, and to access the application materials, please visit www.ready.gov/youth-preparedness.

Hello,

I am looking for a nice place in JP, near the Stony Brook stop for either September, or October. A house share, studio, or a one/two bedroom place might be a good fit. In other words, I'm flexible.

I am a 26 year-old moving to JP from Medford, where I've been for the last 2 years. I'll be starting a new job this year with a student volunteer travel organization, and will mostly be working from home. Because of this, I'm looking for a place that will have some space, so I don't get claustrophobic.

In the past, the best house mates have been friends who are really good at communicating, giving each other space, and having a quick chat at the end of a long day. If I were to share a house, this is what I'm looking for. I love to be active, especially while retreating into nature, cook, take dance classes, read, and watch movies.

If it's not a house share, all I ask for is a quiet, safe place with some friendly neighbors who'd take in my mail when I'm out of town. Also, my job requires me to be abroad for 2-4 months a year, so the ability to sublet is a must. Utilities included would be a huge plus.

Another idea I had was to live in a house with an elderly person and in return, do the shopping, cleaning, etc. I have three years of experience doing overnight and daytime elderly care.

If anyone knows of a housing opportunity that may be good for me, please let me know. I appreciate any leads.

Thanks!

$520/month + utilities (highest: $60/person)

We are 2 ladies in our mid-twenties looking for a 3rd roommate in our cozy JP apartment. Room is available Sept 1.
About the room: well lit with a closet. Our previous roommie fit a double bed, bedside table, desk and a dresser.
About the apt: 3 bedrooms, large open living room with lots of sunlight, 1 bathroom, kitchen, central air, and one ADORABLE male kitten.
About the building: 3 units, coin-op in the basement, plenty of non-resident street parking. Located in the Stonybrook neighborhood, its a short walk to the T, the Brewery complex and on a fair day a very easy walk to Centre St.
About the roommates: both late twenties, 9-5'ers, who like to stay active and occupied in our free time. I am a classical singer with a knack for baking and penchant for brightly colored objects. My roommate is a voracious reader and yoga enthusiast. We are very friendly and fairly clean (somewhere between a 6 and 7 on a scale of 10), and clean up after ourselves.
About you: male or female in the same age range, who is no messier than we are in the common areas. No additional pets. Perhaps you are artistically inclined, perhaps you are a foodie... We are keen on straightforward communication about our surroundings and someone who is capable and responsible enough to pay rent and bills on time every month.

If interested, please reply to this thread. We are aiming to start scheduling visitors for the beginning of August.
