Be the Change, Inc. / ServiceNation

Internship – Spring 2009

Be the Change, Inc., operating out of 2 Canal Park, in Cambridge, MA,founded by Alan Khazei (Co-Founder & former CEO of City Year), is a new national organization inspired by Gandhi’s philosophy that: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

The mission of Be the Change, Inc. is to revitalize our democracy by connecting the service and social entrepreneurship movements to policy development and advocacy in order to build a citizens movement for change. We work to tap the wisdom, experience, and networks of social entrepreneurs and service alumni to craft a bold new policy agenda, mobilize citizens, build coalitions, seed non-partisan advocacy groups, and generate more active participation in our governing process and systems. Initial policy areas focus on national service and education, with future efforts in the areas of poverty and youth policy.

Our first campaign, ServiceNation, is a rapidly moving effort to increase full and part-time service opportunities for people at all life stages, to use proven service strategies to address some of our most difficult societal problems, and to promote service as a core ideal of our democracy. This campaign launched with the ServiceNation Summit, Sept. 11-12 in New York City (which opened with a nationally televised forum on service with now President-elect Barack Obama and Senator John McCain), and will continue with a national grassroots movement aimed at inspiring widespread public support for a new and transformational national service act, and making the expansion of voluntary service a priority for the next president and Congress. ServiceNation is a coalition of over 120 organizations reaching over 100 million people from all backgrounds and sectors of American life.

Throughout the semester, Be the Change, Inc., interns will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects within the ServiceNation campaign. Interns will focus on one department, with the opportunity to collaborate regularly with staff members across fields. Interns will be matched with each department in accordance with their areas of interest. Potential projects include:

* building relationships with ServiceNation Organizing Committee leaders to effectively leverage the coalition, follow up on action items, and track our progress with the Director of Organizing;
* tracking the progress of new legislation, performing legislative outreach to key leaders, and monitoring use of the online legislative network with the Policy Counsel;
* developing action alerts, blogging, and producing videos with the Director of Creative Content;
* tracking relationships with grasstops leaders across sectors and preparing content for a grasstops letter writing campaign with the Director of Policy;
* planning a high-profile event for leaders in the service movement and preparing materials for the celebrity Ambassadors’ Council with the Acting Chief of Staff and Strategic Partnerships;
* developing leadership, organizing, and advocacy trainings with the Deputy Director of Organizing; and
* help develop and maintain grassroots online communities, assist in implementation of CRM database, research and explore other forums of online marketing, and work to promote philanthropic outreach with the Director Online Operations and Partnerships.

Interning with Be the Change, Inc. provides significant opportunities for professional growth and development; interns will gain experience starting an organization, transforming visions to action, and developing the skills necessary to support an innovative system of policy development, widespread citizen mobilization, and new political leadership incubation. They will have the opportunity to participate in organizational meetings and community events on a regular basis. In addition, throughout the internship, interns will participate in a variety of discussions on topics such as policy development, community organizing, and social entrepreneurship. Finally, an internship at Be the Change, Inc. will provide opportunities to develop relationships with leaders in the nonprofit, social entrepreneurship, policy, and political leadership fields.

Interns should have a strong work ethic and thrive in a fast-paced environment. All interns should have strong oral and written communication, presentation, and problem solving skills. They must be well organized, be able to work independently, and have a command of Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Finally, interns should have a background or interest in service, issue advocacy, community organizing, or politics and be excited to learn from opportunities and constructive feedback.

Interested candidates should send a cover letter explaining your qualifications and interest in the position, as well as a resume and writing sample, to Susannah Cowden at scowden@bethechangeinc.org. Internships are unpaid, but can be arranged for course credit. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
