OK, so this isn't WiFi related, but it is wireless related! I'm trying to encourage neighbors to use tools to help map cell phone coverage in JP so we can see what providers give the best coverage in what areas. Kinda fun, too, I think.
...but I think I probably should've just posted it here instead, as the blog post got ZERO traction :). So, is anyone interested? Questions?
I've been using CellMapper, since it seems to be more of a community effort, has an active user forum where the developers particiapte, and provides a TON of data about towers, coverage areas, and signal reports. Hi JP Wireless,

I've been wondering about the feasibility and legality of sharing wireless amongst neighbors on my street.

On Beecher where I live there are 6 triple deckers with six units each and three other units with three building each.

From my living room I can see 16 SSID's.

Here are my questions:

*Can I legally share my router?
*I have a Linksys Wireless G 2.4 ghz - How many people can I share this with before It gets slow? Would we need a better router and which one would…

*We have regular cable internet service. Would need the power boost thingy?
*My guess is we might need AP for each building - Does this right?
*Anything else we should consider?
I was on Centre Street near Jackson Square yesterday and I discovered the SSID "Jamaica Plain Free Wireless". I couldn't connect, though, so it wasn't usable.

Are there any current efforts already providing free wifi in the neighborhood?
