There is currently a proposal to develop a a five-unit condo development at 71 South St. in the space that is currently a two-family Victorian.
Page 4 of this document outlines the proposal. The hearing will be January 24 at 9:30 in room 801 at City Hall. If you can't be there for the hearing, you can mail in a response to the proposal, instructions are on the document.

Last night, my girlfriend's car got broken into on Jamaica Street. Jamaica is a quiet, one-way street off of South Street which is generally peaceful and family oriented. The thieves broke in by manipulating the driver's (street) side window so it came off its track and rummaged around but didn't find anything worth stealing. The car is a 1994 Honda Civic sh*tbox that obviously didn't have anything valuable in it. Perhaps they wanted to steal the vehicle for parts, but she had an ignition…

The car is a 1994 Honda Civic sh*tbox that obviously didn't have anything valuable in it. Perhaps they wanted to steal the vehicle for parts, but she had an ignition disabler installed.
I've lived in JP for about ten years, and this past year I've had my apartment broken into during broad daylight, losing not only my laptop and assorted material items that I worked and saved up for, but the sense of security and happiness that living in JP held for me. The police didn't seem overly interested in solving this crime, and scoffed at the suggestion that they take fingerprints of the window that the criminals clearly used as a point of entry. Multiple friends of mine have had their cars broken into and/or things stolen off of their cars (Thule racks, spoilers, etc.) in fairly "nice" sections of JP. All of this, plus the obvious proliferation of gang violence, is really making me think twice about living in JP. Ten years ago, I would walk from the Midway to Forest Hills at 1am and feel totally fine about it. Now? No way. What is happening to our neighborhood and how can we fix it? I'm at the point where I'd welcome Guliani in to clean up, and I hate that guy and everything he stands for. But I hate getting violated, shot at and robbed more.
48 bustag:neighborsforneighbors.org,2010-07-01:1171189:BlogPost:476702010-07-01T19:52:11.000ZQuinnhttp://neighborsforneighbors.org/profile/Quinn

Hello neighbors,
I just read a post in the JP Gazette that said that "community activists" are working to keep the 48 route running. I live in this community and find this route to be a complete nuisance. First of all, it runs a superfluous route that is already serviced by
the Orange Line and 39 bus. Secondly, it is a terrible waste of resources. I have lived on/just off Boylston Street for many years, and see the bus pass by routinely. In my 9+ years as a resident (since before it went down Boylston, a residential street) and I have never once seen more than three people on this bus, and that's including the driver! Boylston is a side street, not a main thoroughfare, and the road is just too small and crowded to be part of a bus route. Not to mention the environmental impact of running a perpetually empty bus. The 48 route is wasteful and destructive to the environment (in terms of exhaust, noise and danger of accidents on a narrow street with many young families) and there simply must be a better solution to the transportation needs of a few people than this full-sized bus.
I've emailed the MBTA about this and hope to attend the next meeting where this route is discussed. If you're interested in joining me, or have any insight on why this route exists at all, please let me know.

-Quinn
