turtles need new home!

Hello All - Our foster daughter's older sister bought two tiny little cute turtles in Chinatown at the Moon Festival, realized that no, she couldn't take them to college, and sort of dumped them on us.

It turns out that they are red-eared sliders - surprisingly smart and lively pets - but we really don't have room for them. We bought a 10 gallon tank for them, but they have already outgrown it. Full disclosure: these aquatic turtles live for 30 years and grow to be the size of dinner…

Saving your parking spot beyond the 48 hour limit is spreading negative energy.

I totally get the hassle of shoveling out your car, especially with the high levels of snow we have been getting this winter.  That in itself is frustrating.  However, what is more frustrating to me is to take the time to shovel out my spot, and yes save it with a chair for the FIRST 48 HOURS, but then to be respectful of the fact that there are MANY other people in JP who, like me, only have the option of street parking, and therefore no longer HOG a spot with a chair.

Many folks in…

Snow & Parking Wars

I used to have my own little parking space when I was renting, but now I have to compete for street parking in JP.  I think this is usually no big deal, but it's quickly become a pain with all of the snow.  I had no idea what a pain this could be.

I realize that the official rule for marking your parking space is now 48 hours following the end of a snow emergency.  I think that makes sense... people should be able to use the spot they spent hours shoveling out for a bit of…

Help map cell coverage in JP! Plus: how to improve your cell service

Hi neighbors!  I'm something of a GIS nerd, and I discovered that you can download apps for iPhone and Android devices to record and map cell phone signal strength.

I've been using Sensorly on my Android phone for a while now, but I noticed some areas I never travel through in JP haven't been mapped, or don't have a lot of sample data.  I was thinking it'd be a fun nerdly activity for some neighbors to download and install these tools.  Then, among other things, our neighbors can make…

Menino has announced that a Snow Emergency and parking ban for the City of Boston will go into effect tonight at 7pm to ensure that city roads are cleared for the morning commute.   Due to the unpredictable nature of this storm and conflicting forecasts, Mayor Menino has issued this snow emergency to allow Public Works crews the best opportunity to treat, plow, and clear the streets as efficiently as possible, particularly after the…

Shovel as if your heart matters

If you're a 20-something or a 30-something or a physically fit any-something, shoveling out your car and clearing snow from your walk shouldn't be a problem. But when you're of an AARP age, like me, shoveling can be a bit hazardous. In fact, it's a known trigger for heart attack, especially for folks with heart disease or those who don't usually get any exercise.

For my day job, I write about health for…

LARGE CHOCOLATE LAB FOUND ON CLIVE STREET BROUGHT TO MSPCA

neighbors -

I was just walking my dog up Boylston St when I was approached by a man with a large, (aprox 70-80 pound) chocolate lab that he had found on Clive Street.  The dog had no tags.  The man was on his way to take the dog to Angell.  Please put the word out, and make sure your dogs tags are secure, and their microchips are up to date.

Faithfulness & Fruitfulness

Did you know that God wants you to have a full and fruitful life?  It's true.  Jesus said He came that we might have life, and have it to the full.  (John 10:10)  He came to give us access to and experience of abundant life.  Jesus also told His disciples that they did not choose Him, He chose them and appointed them - to go and bear fruit that would last. (John 15:16)  He wants us to live…
