Do you send your kids to the Boston Public Schools?

Hello All-

What are your experiences with the Boston Public School System? I'm looking at their ratings on greatschools.com and they look pretty grim.

Does this match your experience?

My husband and I are planning on adopting an child soon, possibly a school age child from foster care. We love J.P., but can't afford private school. Any kid we adopt would be eligible for special programs at the public schools, but I wonder how hard it might be to get them the help they need.

Any advice or comments appreciated!

I am a parent of child living in JP. There is a very active group of parents for "West Zone" - the BPS school zone JP falls into. You might want to join the group and read up on old posts. You can find them online at:

Susan, my son due to his age is eligible for K1 slot in Sept but we didn't get into any of the schools on our list - just wait list positions. So we don't yet have personal experiences with BPS. If you join the West Zone parents there are many folks who are currently at elementary schools in the area. If you join and post you are likely to get some responses.
