The Eliot School needs volunteer classroom aides to help teach children woodworking and art - during the spring semester one afternoon a week, or during the summer for one week at a time either 8:30am-12:30pm or 12-4pm. Anyone is welcome to apply.
Gain excellent experience working alongside experienced instructors. Perfect for those interested in exploring a career teaching children. We are happy to complete paperwork for course credit or community service.
Spring and Fall Semesters. Sign on for a semester at a time, assisting in our School Partnership Program, bringing woodworking and art to students in selected Boston Public Schools in Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, Roxbury and Roslindale – some after school, some during the school day. Maximum class size: 12.
Summer Programs for Children. Classes are organized one week at a time, Monday–Friday, from 8:30am-12:30pm and 12pm-4pm. Choose any number of weeks, mornings, afternoons, or both. Minimum: One week, half-day. Maximum: Six weeks, full days. Children are age 6-8, 9-12 and 12-14. Maximum class size: 12. Program runs from June 13 through July 21. The Eliot School offers classes and workshops in arts and fine crafts to people of all ages. A full-service wood shop, sewing room and all-purpose art room make up our 1831 schoolhouse in Jamaica Plain. In addition, our School Partnership program sends art and woodworking teachers out to selected public schools in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Roslindale and Roxbury. We teach 1,300 adults and 400 children in our schoolhouse each year, plus 800-1,000 children through our School Partnership Program. More information at www.eliotschool.org
Qualifications: Interest in teaching children. For woodworking aides: familiarity with basic hand tools. For art aides: Basic art skills.
