Neighbors for Neighbors

Do stuff with and for your neighbors

Hi All - I'm new to the neighborhood, and about a week after I moved in read a note posted on my 48 Boylston front door alerting me to a recent break-in. My fellow 1st floor neighbors let us know that their apartment had been broken in to, in the middle of the day. The burglar came in through the front window off the porch (which, since it was not borken, I'm assuming they left open).

This happened last Monday (8/24) in the afternoon. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I don't think the break in was reported - all that was taken was a laptop and charger.

Thanks!

Thanks for posting about this. They really should report it, little things like this shouldn't be overlooked.
Neighbors,

I checked out the crime reports tool above and found the following - this was not the only daytime residential burglary in the area. I've been in touch with Sgt. Krause and they are looking into this.

26 Aug 2009, 100 BLOCK ATHERTON ST, Burglary - Residential in Daytime
24 Aug 2009, 100 BLOCK Street, PETER ST, Burglary - Residential in Daytime
24 Aug 2009, 48 Boylston - REPORTED BY NFN MEMBER - Residential in Daytime.
21 Aug 2009, 100 BLOCK CHESTNUT AV, Burglary - Residential in Daytime
08 Aug 2009, 100 BLOCK MOZART ST, Burglary - Residential at Night

Here is what we can do:

CALL 911 to report any suspicious behavior like
- people snooping around the sides of bulding
- ringing multiple door bells and asking for someone who does not live in your building
- someone crawling through a window
- call even if the person moves on - they will try another building.

GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS:
For safety and community sake, you should know the names of all your neighbors in your building, and in the building to the left, right, front, and back of you. I call the the immediate neighbor zone. These are the folks most likely to see/witness/ and able to prevent crime like burglaries. All they need to do is say, can I help you find someone? Then immediately call 911. Crime like this are crime of opportunity - and can easily be deterred when the those committing these crime loose their anonymity.

OTHER TIPS

1) Lock all door and windows - use window stops if you want to let in fresh air - don't make it easy.
2) When not home, pull the shades down and leave a radio on - removes motivation and make it "sound" like someone is home.
3) Secure air conditioners - they are to push in and criminals crawl right in.
4) Remove valuable from the line of sight - don't entice.

Thanks for following up on this Joseph! I'm glad to see that the break in was reported, and am obviously concerned about the string of break ins in our neighborhood. I'm new to the neighborhood and still trying to get to know everyone, so unfortunately I'm suspicious of anyone I percieve to be just "hanging around" even it they could be my neighbor! Thanks for setting up a forum that allows to me get to know and commnicate with my neighbors!
Christine,

The crime was not actually reported. I added it to the report. If you haven't done so already please ask you neighbors to report the crime and let them know others in the neighborhood have occurred.

In regards to being suspicious, I'd like think of myself as curious, and approach all neighbors with curiosity. I introduce to myself to everyone on my street and great EVERYONE with a hello or good "what ever time of day it is" and look them in the eye. I do this because - it's the kind of interaction I appreciate and also because it sets a tone of that "people talk to and know each other here" which is not conducive to crime.

Thanks for taking the time to post this information and look forward to meeting you in person sometime soon. I'm always walking around with my big white furry dog jenny. See ya!
Unfortunatley, my neighbors moved out of the apartment on Sept 1, for reasons unrelated to the break in, so if it wasn't reported before, I don't think it will be. New neighbors have moved in, and I will make sure to advise them, and the rest of the people in the house, of the other recent break ins in the neighborhood.

I think my "suspicion" was more due to post break-in jitters than a all-around distrust for people... Curiosity is a much better way to look at it - and I'll definitiely take your advice. See you around and thanks again!
Cool. Let's keep an eye out for the crime reports. If this continues we should flyer the streets.
Will do!
Thanks for looking into it for all of us, Joseph, and for your advice. I finally know, after exactly on year, everyone in my bld's five other apts. Time to start on the neighbors next door. (My side of Boylston seems really transitory tho)
Do you know of some product that secures window air conditioners by the way? thought there might be some well known something I do not know about...first time I lived on first floor and now afraid about my airconditioner being pushed in. Not that I have any valuables to be stolen, lol.

One thing I did, perhaps obvious, is ask landlord to put bars on windows (he would only do interior) directly off of front and back porch, where it's easiest to break in. THat has given me some peace of mind.
Laura,

I'll look into this and get back to you.
Thanks Joseph. had thought you had something in particular in mind, that's all. I had more success later in finding what to do.

One easy idea was to put a NAIL or screw in the frame so the window holding the air conditioner cannot be opened any more than it already is (ie for the air conditioner itself). What they do to get in is open the window a bit more than the air condtioner so they can push it in or it falls out...they can't do that if a nail prevents opening.
Welcome to the neighborhood...I live VERY close to you, so will be sure to introduce self. Thanks so much for your report as I live on first floor myself...just a few blds away.
