Neighbors for Neighbors

Do stuff with and for your neighbors

Hi JP Wireless,

I've been wondering about the feasibility and legality of sharing wireless amongst neighbors on my street.

On Beecher where I live there are 6 triple deckers with six units each and three other units with three building each.

From my living room I can see 16 SSID's.

Here are my questions:

*Can I legally share my router?
*I have a Linksys Wireless G 2.4 ghz - How many people can I share this with before It gets slow? Would we need a better router and which one would suggest?
*We have regular cable internet service. Would need the power boost thingy?
*My guess is we might need AP for each building - Does this right?
*Anything else we should consider?

Thanks.

I'm currently not sharing my wireless, but I would like to get back into doing it.

The way I was doing it was with a FON router -- http://corp.fon.com/en/products/simpl/

It splits your wireless up into two networks, a private one and a public one. You can control how much of your available bandwidth to allocate to your public network. I believe this is the safest way to do it, as you can keep all of your own computers on a separate network.
