President's Letter

from Ed Stanley, President, Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club

As the new (and first male!) President of the Jamaica Plain Tuesday Club, I want to heartily welcome you and apprise you of all the latest developments and plans for the property and Club. These are exciting times for us, led by a new, enthusiastic Board and supported and enhanced by a cadre of dedicated volunteers. Personally, I am indeed honored to serve you and contribute to the preservation of our treasured historic House and grounds and their enhancement of Jamaica Plain and the surrounding community.

The last several months have seen exciting developments at the House. On the funding front, a number of grant applications have been submitted for a variety of projects, and we have received several awards. Among them are funding for an organizational business plan from the National Trust for Historic Preservation and a generous award from the City of Boston Partners with Non-Profits program to complete our magnificent brick walkway leading up to the house from South Street. Grant applications in the works include those for a feasibility study for the 1811 Ell and funding for landscape improvements including historically appropriate fencing.

Last spring and this summer have seen new and innovative uses and activities at the House which have provided community exposure to the historic property while incorporating much-needed income streams. The ongoing effort to attract event rentals of the House and grounds continues to prosper, with many a happy wedding and family function taking place on the property. And the grounds have almost serendipitously become the “in” place to be in Jamaica Plain on Thursdays as crowds converge on the property to partake of delicious fare from gourmet food trucks in the driveway.

In store for the coming weeks and months are a whole range of programs and activities, listed elsewhere in this Newsletter, that the community–including members–can enjoy on the grounds and in the House. Of course, don’t forget to schedule a guided tour of the House with one of our highly knowledgeable and informative docents! Please see our website for more details: www.loring-greenough.org.

All of our fascinating and diverse programs and activities couldn’t happen without the generous time, skills, and effort of committed and enthusiastic volunteers. Please consider donating YOUR time to the house and the JP Tuesday Club, whatever your interests may be, whether in historic preservation, history, gardening and landscape, collections, programs, or fundraising. Drop by the House to talk or contact us through our website.

I personally invite you over to enjoy the myriad of happenings at the Loring-Greenough House. Hope to see you there soon!
