ALCHEMIST
1/29/2010 10:30 PM at "The Sock Hop" Bringing Back The 50’s
435 South Huntington Avenue, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts 02130
Cost: Always Free
Sock hops were traditionally held in school gyms, and participants were made to remove their shoes to protect the varnish. We have to keep our shoes on because of the health department, and also someone might break a glass. We’ll play familiar stuff that’s good to move to, like early rock n’ roll (Bill Halley, Buddy Holly, Big Bopper) and soul (Sam Cooke, Little Richard, Otis Redding, Fats Domino), as well as stretching slightly outside the 50’s with a dip into Motown (Smokey Robinson, The Supremes). 50’s style is encouraged, so guys, roll the cigarette box up your sleeve, and ladies break out the poodle skirts. Prior to the DJ, a soon-to-be-named band will play portions of the "Stand By Me" soundtrack to kick off the dance.
