Neighbors for Neighbors

Do stuff with and for your neighbors

Hi- If you work downtown, or anywhere beyond walking distance, one of the simplest ways to improve your quality of life is to ride your bike to work every day. The fuel burns a little cleaner than gasoline, you get fresh air and exercise, you don't have to pay to inhabit a subterranean germ factory, etc. But why don't more people commute to work on their bikes? Two reasons I've heard countless times - 1) too uncomfortable with riding on busy city streets, and 2) nowhere to shower / change at work. I'm interested in forming a group/club that will help folks address those two issues. The goal is to create a space downtown to park bikes, keep work clothes stored, and shower. I have some ideas about how to make it happen, and would like to set up a meeting to with folks who are interested in starting it up.

So far in ten years of biking to work in Boston and Baltimore. I have always found that my employers has been willing to accommodate my cycling by either providing a shower or providing access to a shower. I pop into the office on week ends to replace my clothes with a weeks supply of fresh clothes Employer provided closest). It is very easy to do. I live in JP and work in Cambridge. the only place that is scary to ride is the BU bridge and that will be replaced soon.

Hi Loay- nice to hear from you. Would you be interested in meeting some time to help out with the commuter club?
Sure. Just let me know when. Biking is so easy as to be laughable. At the end of the day I get on my bike and leave work far far behind. It is magic!!
I agree - theres no better way to unwind from an intense workday than hopping on the bike and burning some carbs. I'll post a message for a meeting time and place soon - either for next weekend, or a bit after that. Have a good weekend - some good riding weather out there today.
Hi, I work in cambridge and do not have a place to shower when I get to work. I am interested in meeting to see what we can do. Thanks for initiating this. -Sarah
Most buildings are built with showers somewhere in them as I think they are required by code. The trick is to get access to them and that usually means a talk with your landlord or employer.I am fortunate as my current employer while doing an office fit out built a shower in the office. Very Sweet!!!!!!!!! Bike parking is usually a trickier issue but her again we I have access to underground parking. Saves them the cost of a parking space.
