Hi-Lo to close: Whole Food to move in

I just got an alert from JP Patch, that the Jamaica Plain Gazette has reported that Hi-Lo will close and Whole Foods will move in. 

While many like myself appreciate Whole Foods, I know that Hi-Lo has served this community for many years and provided affordable and traditional food products to many of our neighbors. 

I'm excited and concerned - how do you feel about this?

I just moved here and one of the things about JP that REALLY resonated was the absence of a lot of franchise businesses.  I mean there isn't a Starbucks, there isn't a Bank of America -- most businesses in JP are locally owned and locally supported.  Without even pretending I have real deep roots in the area, it makes me a little sad to see what is clearly a local institution replaced by what has come to represent mainstream gentrified America.  I hope it is not a harbinger of what is to come. I will do my best to support the local businesses in JP.

trader joe's.  it's way cheaper than whole foods, harvest or coop. 

can we advocate for this?

I have to agree that Trader Joe's would be a much more appropriate store for the community. Nothing against whole foods, I just feel like they are a little bit high-end for JP...

I think Trader Joe's overlaps too much with Harvest Co-op and City Feed and Supply. I'm looking forward to having a Whole Foods.

Whole Foods usually has a good seafood selection. This is something that seems to be lacking in the area.

TRADER JOE'S, because it's awesome, and so our whole community can afford to shop, not just the yuppies. KEEP WHOLE FOODS OUT OF JAMAICA PLAIN! Keep Hyde Square diverse!

To me, this is the very definition of bittersweet. I worry most about the rent in the area. But I'm hopeful that it will add to the strong community. I keep going back and forth though... this is hard one to wrap my head around how I really feel about it.

 

I do know that I miss JP more than any place I've ever missed before. We are very much looking forward to the day we can leave NYC and come back to the wonderful home that is Jamaica Plain.
