Neighbors for Neighbors

Do stuff with and for your neighbors

Neighbors,

As you know there have been a couple of violent incidents in Jamaica Plain over the past couple of days. These incidents are very sad, and I wanted to offer you some steps you can take be a part of the solution.

Here's what we can do:
Read more below for details.

  • Join the E-13/Jamaica Plain Neighbors Network. Meet and organize with your neighbors in our neighborhoods and on your streets to prevent crime and build community. Get access to and support from the BPD, the city, elected officials, and community partners.

  • Support organizations serving our youth. See a list of organizations making a real difference in our neighborhood. Contact them and find out how you can support their crucial work. (See below.)
  • Attend the Public Safety Meeting, Monday April 28, 6pm at the Park, Across From Stonybrook T Station. If it rains it will be at Spontaneous Celebrations. (see below)

  • Help cover funeral costs for the victim's family via Spontaneous Celebrations. (See below.)

E-13/Jamaica Plain Neighbors Network:

What we can do about crime in our neighborhood? The short-term answer is: change our behavior!

The first change in behavior I encourage you to make is to call 911 when you think you or others need or will need police attention. More often than not I hear, "I saw such and such . . . and I should have called." Call 911 so we can help prevent crimes from happening. Do not be afraid to call! BPD is happy to check things out and prefers to err on the side of caution.

Here are other other practical examples of ways changing your behavior can prevent crime. Have you ever noticed or left valuables in your car? Electronics such as GPS systems, iPods, and car stereos are items on thieves' shopping lists. Even spare change can be reason enough for someone to break into a car. My rule of thumb is to keep my car empty; I don't even leave any trash in my car. Most crime is opportunistic, so when the opportunity presents itself, like when we leave valuables in our cars, thieves seize the opportunity. By changing our behavior and removing our valuables, we remove the opportunity, and the crime is prevented.
So how do we educate and mobilize each other to make these simple changes in behavior?
We start by getting as many JP residents as possible to join the E-13/Jamaica Plain Neighbors Network. On this network we'll connect, communicate, and organize with our neighbors in our neighborhoods and on our streets. We'll also receive crime prevention tips from the BPD, and communications about crime and community happenings. You can either join now, or wait for the invitation I will send you shortly.

Note: This is different from our Neighbors for Neighbors Social Activity and Volunteer Network where we do fun stuff with and for our neighbors. You should join that as well if you have not already.

It is not too late to make your contributions to Youth Week. You have two options:

  1. Donate online right now

Spontaneous Celebrations is accepting checks to help cover funeral costs for the victim's family. The victim had a sibling who was part of Spontaneous Celebrations' programs.
