BOSTON, July 30, 2010—Boston Police Commissioner Edward F. Davis and Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley today announced the arrest of a Dorchester man for the May 8 shooting death of 14-year-old Jaewon Martin and the non-fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy in Jamaica Plain.

Boston Police homicide detectives acting in the course of a Suffolk County Grand Jury investigation today arrested TIMOTHY HEARNS (D.O.B. 3/13/90) on warrants charging him with murder and armed assault with intent to murder. The warrants were approved last night amid an ongoing investigation by the homicide units of the Boston Police Department and Suffolk DA’s office.

Hearns is expected to be arraigned at 2:00 in Roxbury District Court. His photograph will not be released at this time in light of the ongoing nature of the investigation and, in particular, the extremely sensitive nature of eyewitness identifications developed thus far.

“I would like to commend Sgt. Det. Joseph MacDonald and his team, who, along with prosecutors developed crucial evidence that resulted in this arrest,” Commissioner Davis said, adding, “Mrs. Martin and her whole family are devastated by Jaewon’s murder. This around-the-clock, tenacious investigation is proof of our promise to the Martin family that we will do everything we can to secure justice for Jaewon.”

“As prosecutors, we know every life has meaning, but Jaewon’s also had great promise,” Conley said. “The promise of this young life was ended by the utter irrationality of a man with a gun and no regard for who it killed. Like Cedirick Steele, Steven Odom, and too many other victims of gun violence in Boston, Jaewon was shot dead not because of who he was or what he did but because of where he happened to be – at a city basketball court – on a Saturday afternoon. Boston Police and Suffolk prosecutors won’t rest until we hold accountable the person who brought death to this child full of life.”

Boston Police responded to the area of 944 Parker St. at about 3:40 p.m. on May 8 for a report of a person shot. Officers arrived to find two young men suffering from gunshot wounds. One, later identified as Martin, was transported to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he died of a gunshot wound to his chest; the second was transported to Children’s Hospital and was treated for injuries to his chest and arm that were not life-threatening.
