Do stuff with and for your neighbors

Hi everyone,
As you may have read, there has been a spike in home robberies this summer... and sadly, I am one of them. 6 days after my Thule system was completely ripped off of my car (locked and everything on a Sunday afternoon) my apt was robbed in broad daylight. We estimate that the break-in occurred between 9:30am and 12:00pm on Friday.

The reason that I write is this... we have the basic Boylston St windows, older, yet equipped with window 'limiters' that limit how high the window can be raised.

We thought we were safe leaving them open a few inches (10 years in the same spot and no issues so far) because that was as far as they could go with the limiters in place... who could fit through there?!!

Well, one of them is set too high (thanks to whoever installed them 30 years ago) and left about 7 inches of clearance. Additionally, we left our shades drawn... always a bad idea. The perpetrators are obviously (to me) teens or in their early 20s... they had to have been very skinny in the chest to get in that window, and knew exactly what PS3games were worth stealing and which were junk.

Then, again last week someone rang our doorbell at 11am for no reason.

This issue obviously isn't going away, PLEASE at the very least get renters insurance- and make yourselves known if you see anyone acting suspiciously. Say Hi to them, maybe even call 911 if it is truly suspicious behavior. Lets watch out for one another... our neighbors are worth protecting.

That's pretty brazen. Thanks for the info.

we do have the adt stickers... and we are typically very good about locking the windows completely... it was just an oversight.. but one day CAN lead to a world of hurt. =(

as for the Thule, it was the kind that hook into the gutters, but it had locks... they would have to have preyed it off and then bored out the locks to make it sellable or useable. bummer indeed.

You are apparently the third recent victim of the roof rack theft and I'm wondering how they do it. Did you have the type that hooks in above the door frame under the roof? Or the type that attaches into factory rails?

I feel for first floor people in the summer because it can be a rock and a hard place with windows and heat, especially if you don't have an alarm system as a deterrent. However, even if you don't have an alarm system, maybe because you are a renter, you could always go onto eBay and buy ADT alarm stickers and signs. It may be just enough deterrence for someone to move on.
