Tonight, I learned my neighbor, who lives at 29 Beecher Unit 1 was broken into.
The criminals broke into the apartment through the rear window, which according to my neighbor had window stops in place. This is the second time the unit has been broken into. The shades were drawn.
A laptop and jewelry box were stolen. My neighbor left the apartment in the early morning and returned around 11:30 pm on Friday, 9/25/2009 to discover the robbery.
This crime has been reported.
We will be holding a meeting for neighbors on surrounding streets at 1:00 pm, at Beecher Street Park, to discuss this incident. The purpose of this meeting is to develop a plan to mobilize our neighborhood to prevent future occurrences.

I am floored by what you are doing for our community, Joseph. Thanks so much.
I have questions about the break in...
...The info that the stop was being used on the window in question (back window you said) was useful. Do you know or can you find out if it was a porch window or one right on ground level? did they break the glass then?
I ask because there have been a number of break-ins of first floor apartments in our immediate area lately, all through windows. I am trying to figure out how vigilant (window bar wise) one needs to be living now in this neighborhood on the first floor...some of my windows have bars, some don't, some are at ground level, some not. I guess we are all, in general, trying to figure out how vigilant to be.
also, do you happen to know if there someone at the police station who answers safety/security questions (like my window bar ones)? I thought they used to.
