Vegans, there's a new flavor at JP Licks: Soy Dark Chocolate! The rich cocoa flavor delivers. It's now my favorite chocolate soy cream beating out Waltham's Lizzie's.

The shwarma place on Centre Street has new management!
It's now called Cafe Beirut. I sampled their fare and it tastes authentic to me. I haven't been to Lebanon but have eaten off of Palestinian pushcarts and the genre is identical. Decor is a little sparse and it could do without the blinds but from a foodie standpoint, it's a fantastic takeout spot.

On another note, I ate at JP's new Scottish restaurant last night - The Haven. They still have a few wrinkles to iron out with the staff, but I had a lovely fish dinner (i.e. fish and chips). They only have beer and wine at this point, but are working on getting a full liquor license in the future.

Thanks for your info, that is very kind. I have had a lot of bad experiences with GF baking. I have learned some tricks though - like you MUST use a springform pan whenever you can. It does just seem like some things simply do not want to be gluten free. You can make them, but bleah. That said here is a link to a very awesome recipe for a flourless cake by Nigella Lawson that comes out like a really elegant orange almond coffee cake. Of course if you can't have eggs or almonds this is not for you. Have you heard of BabyCakes NY? They are a gluten-free bakery in NYC. I have their cookbook, BabyCakes, but haven't tried reviewing their recipes because you seem to need a lot of ingredients that are hard to find (or are expensive). But maybe you'd want to try to make something for your beau!

I just had an apple pie from Fiore's Bakery yesterday and I just wanted to say somewhere that it was WAY ABOVE AVERAGE and really really reasonably priced. I've also been impressed they are doing a lot of nice gluten free baking there too. My GF beau is very happy with their cupcakes. And the gluten free brownie is not just for the gluten free. Ok plug over.
