JP Ultimate Frisbee

I've been looking for a group that gets together for various Ultimate fun- tossing around, laid-back pickup, a semi-regular pickup UPA-rules game, and maybe even some skills/drills practice. Haven't found one, so I'm creating one!

Why this group?

Please note we are now on Google Groups. Feel free to "join" here to support NfN, but all announcements and discussions will happen on the google group.

There are various groups in Boston that play Ultimate, ranging from pickup games you have to walk/bike/drive by to find out about, to pickup groups that have their own websites and hold regular games. Boston is even home to Boston Ultimate Disc Alliance, which organizes competitive leagues.

What I've personally looked for is a group which welcomes all levels of players, has games which are easy to find out about, is in my neighborhood/community...and helps each other learn how to play better, by doing more than just holding pickup games.

We're starting with "learning games":
-We play with most of the UPA rules; the simplified version is Ultimate in Ten Rules. We'll help you with the more specific rules in-game.
-If you have a question, we stop and explain
-We do our best to even the teams, share tips and knowledge with each other, encourage people to play against players of similar skill level, and not play dangerously or aggressively, especially with newer players.

With luck as the group grows, we'll also meet up to practice throws, chase some discs, teach each other wacky throws, shoot the breeze, and enjoy being outside. Maybe hold some different levels of pickup games- like a more competitive game for the experienced folks, or a special beginner session. Wouldn't it also be great to put together a team to go to an area tournament?

I want to give beginners an environment to learn to throw and play the game, give new-ish players exposure to a competitive game, and invite experienced players to share their knowledge and love of the game.

If you're down to toss some disc, run a little (not a game), and enjoy some sun then you should join me tonight (5/24) at Stonybrook at 6:30 pm.

Temps in the 40s tomorrow...

Great idea! When and where? Is everyone else in?

I was noticing the same thing- that we seem to be getting close to that critical kick-off point! I was about to invite everyone to meet up for some hot chocolate and talk about what we'd like to do. Saturday looks like it is going to be pretty seasonable. Why don't we have a toss-around session and then hit JP Licks or Fiore's for some HC? I can create an 'event' for it here, and we'll also welcome anyone new/beginner/rusty and maybe attract some more folks?

Whoo hoooo! 6 people! Now there's enough for a pick up game of 3 on 3! Anyone like playing in the winter? My Saturday morning is open!

Years ago I used to play with an informal pick up group at Tufts, on Saturday morning. It was my first introduction to Ultimate. I LOVED IT!! There wasn't the 10-count. We didn't even use sidelines or back-of-end lines. This led to fun opportunities to slide. Either way, I'd love to join an informal-ish pick up group around here.

Played for a long time, now retired from league play due to injury. But could get into something pretty casual

Hey Rich, you're right! I enjoy playing with them, but it's pretty solidly just a pickup game. It's hard to describe, maybe you know what I'm talking about, but for those who don't...in pickup games, most players are just looking to play. I'm looking to form a group of Ultimate players that certainly do pickup games, but also are interested in learning how to play better, doing drills together, that sort of stuff. There is a frustrating gap between pickup games (and even BUDA's Learning Leage) and even a friendly competitive league like BUDA Hat.

I'm down for tossing disc and working on throws. Been a while for me.
