We have all had instances when we thought we understood what was happening, only later to find out that we had actually seriously misread the situation. Maybe we misinterpreted someone's facial expressions or emotions, or found out that we only had some of the facts. Whatever the case, our misunderstandings usually lead us to wrong conclusions.
If these misreads happen in the natural realm, how much more often do you think it might happen in the spiritual realm? Sometimes our judgments may lead us to become nervous or insecure, yet we don't need to do so. The Apostle Paul wrote, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:6-7)
We need to do our best to pay attention and be alert naturally and spiritually. Yet, we must always realize that our perceptions are limited and our ability to interpret what we perceive may be even more lacking. Scripture encourages you to, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and not lean on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6)
We need to seek God's perspectives, and trust Him to provide the needed wisdom. (James 1:5) We also need to look for His timing. Often there is much more going on than we realize - there are many variables under the surface. We have a tendency to look at the appearance of things, but God looks at and discerns the heart of the matter. (1 Samuel 16:7)
This calls for humility. We must realize that we need God's help. Only God is omniscient - only God knows what is really going on. The good news is that He wants to reveal His ways and perspectives to us. He wants to lead and guide us, and He has provided His Holy Spirit to counsel and direct us. He is not threatened, nervous or insecure; His timing is impeccable; and He cares for you.
Are you facing any situations where you need God's perspective? Don't be too proud or too rushed to seek Him. Slow down, acknowledge your need and simply ask. Trust that He hears you, and that He will guide you in due time - in His timing. Trust in Him, not just your own perceptions or resources. This is how the spiritual life works - this is multidimensional living. You have been given access in Christ to this kind of supernatural insight. God will hear you, answer you and guide you in His time - yours is to be alert and humbly responsive.
Seeking God with you,
Pastor Tom
