Why All the Waiting

Do remember when you were young, so often being full of anticipation, yet having to wait.  You were waiting for Christmas, waiting for your birthday, waiting to be old enough to stay up past 9pm, waiting for school to get out, waiting for you drivers permit, waiting for graduation, waiting, waiting, waiting.  Do you remember your parents saying, "Wait till you get older, then you will..?" Waiting is a big part of growing up and maturing.  It is also a big part of growing in the Lord.  Scripture…See More

All Kinds of Prayer

Do you think of yourself as a spiritual person?  Most people do not.  They honestly feel spiritually disqualified by their lack of prayer.  Some people try to suppress these feelings of spiritual lack by rationalizing.  They say, "I don't need to spend specific time praying, I pray along the way - throughout my day."  This may be true, and Scripture does teach us to "pray continually." (1 Thessalonians 5:17)  However, sometimes those who say they are praying all the time, when most honest,…See More

What Are You Becoming?

When children are young, we ask them what they want to be when they grow up.  When leaders cast vision for their organization, they describe what they want they want to become.  Life is very much about "becoming," and making the needed adjustments along the way. How did Tom Brady become Tom Brady, one of the winningest quarterbacks of all time?  Did it happen when he signed on as a back-up with Patriots?  Did it happen when Drew Bledsoe was seriously injured in 2001, opening the opportunity for…See More

Caught Off Guard

When was the last time you were seriously caught off guard?  Possibly a large bill came that you weren't expecting, or maybe it was an illness, or you had an accident.  You could have been called on to make a presentation, or train someone, or give an account - for which you were not prepared.  Maybe it was a positive surprise, possibly someone sent you a gift or expressed love that you had not expected. Even though some interruptions are fun and exciting, we all tend to fear being caught in an…See More

When You Speak

Have you ever seen anyone who speaks at others, but rarely with them?  Such people may say many words, but they often miss the mark - no lasting or impactful message is received.  It is as if they are shooting a gun, or at times a machine gun, but never taking the time to take aim.  Let's take a moment and unpack a verse of Scripture that can really help us understand how to best communicate. "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak ..." (James 1:19)  If we are going to communicate…See More

Becoming a "Drealist"

Have you ever walked closely with a dreamer - somebody who always lives in the future, but rarely acts in the present?  Such people can be fun to be around for short periods of time.  They can spin tales of possibilities, and they can give you hopes for a bright new day.  But, after a while, they can grow wearisome because they don't often think through the implications of their dreams, and they don't life practically toward their visions. On the other hand, some people are so practical all the…See More

Budging Others

Have you ever noticed how some people just are not with the program?  They seem to be more like dead weight than helpful weight bearers.  These people might be in your work place, on your sports team, in your class at school, in your family or at your church. Our natural tendencies are to become frustrated with such people, to become angry with them and/or grumble about them. However, none of these responses are very healthy, nor are the helpful.  First, we would be wise to discern why the…See More

Beyond Circumstance

Sometimes your life is on a roll - everything you do seems to produce positive results, sometimes even better than you "deserve."  At other times, however, you work and you pray and you do what you can, but it seems all in vain - there are little or no positive results for your hard labor.  These different seasons both have challenges, but their primary challenge is common to both. Good times and bad times can both serve as temptations to divert your attention from your primary relationship…See More
