I used to have my own little parking space when I was renting, but now I have to compete for street parking in JP.  I think this is usually no big deal, but it's quickly become a pain with all of the snow.  I had no idea what a pain this could be.

 

I realize that the official rule for marking your parking space is now 48 hours following the end of a snow emergency.  I think that makes sense... people should be able to use the spot they spent hours shoveling out for a bit of time.  I've seen people try to mark spaces for a week or more and it's a bit ridiculous.  What I don't get is why people have been moving the spot-markers lately - not to take the parking spot for themselves after the 48-hour period, but just to remove them to be jerks to their neighbors.

 

Doesn't this just further complicate the existing issues?  If I marked a parking spot somewhere and someone else has taken it, I assume they moved my marker in order to do this... but it seems that they may have innocently taken a spot that someone else has unmarked. I don't understand the reasoning behind this - it's not your place to remove someone elses' marker unless you're taking the spot.  Furthermore, we get 48 hours to use that spot.  I spent 3 hours shoveling out a spot only to have it taken, and I'm assuming someone down my street is removing markers because I've seen them on the side of the road without cars parked there.  It's so obnoxious. 

 

If everyone cleared snow parking spots properly, stopped piling snow in the street which makes parking spots more scarce, and stopped messing with other people's parking spot savers within the allowed 48-hour period following a snow emergency, I think crazy snow-filled winters like these would be less stressful for everyone.

You pick your battles. You don't know the first thing about me, or how good of a neighbor I am. I helped multiple neighbors dig out over these past storms, helped them get out of "their" spots and actively seek to improve my community and neighborhood. Your arguments are baseless and have no logic to them whatsoever, other than plain old selfishness.

I never said I moved space savers before 48 hours either.

Pick your battles, Quinn.  Save your energy for real issues, like people who don't shovel their sidewalk.  Maybe it looks like people are "claiming" their spots - but as long as it's within the guidelines set forth by the city, it's allowed.  Stop pissing off your neighbors and being irresponsible.  If you have a problem with the laws in this city, talk to lawmakers or move.  Who made you space-saver police anyway?  Removing them is obnoxious.  It may be public property, but private citizens are shoveling them out.

My opinion is on the snow removal etiquette post, so rather than repeat everything I said there, I'll defer to that post. And rather than respond to Matt in that post by repeating previously mentioned facts, I'll just say that everyone shovels their car out for hours. How do you think any car is on the road, driving? Because they shoveled it out, just like you. We are all equals. It is a public street. When you try to lay claim to the street, YOU are being a jerk. Coming home to see your chair moved (I don't advocate stealing, but the chair is technically "dumped" by being left in the street) should be no surprise. The entitled attitude that says, "I claim this spot for Spain!" is ridiculous. And it is obnoxious. We're all in the same boat and leaving space savers is part of the problem, not part of the solution.

ok people... calm down.   i have been treated VERY badly this year by my neighbors in regards to the parking situation- but lets be serious... it is street parking.  STREET PARKING.   it is not your driveway- and even though i spend 3 hours each time to shovel out my own spot -only to find my chair gone 4 hours later (not moved, but gone)... I have no one to blame but myself.  i was the idiot that talked and talked about JP being such a wonderful place to live- and more people with cars are moved in.

bring back the high crime and living without community... I want a parking spot.

The parking in JP has gotten out of control in the snow.  I agree that if you spend the time to fully shovel a spot, you should be able to save it for the 48-hour-period after the snow storm.  BUT if you simply gun it and pull out of the spot, leaving a snowy mess behind you have no grounds for saving that spot....and no one has grounds to save a spot for weeks on end.  Parking has become nearly impossible.  I know someone who moved a space saver over the weekend because they were new to the neighborhood and had to run into their new apt. for FIVE minutes to get keys and make things official.....when they got back to their car their lovely new neighbor had shovel heaps of snow INTO their car.  Welcome to the neighborhood!  COME ON PEOPLE!!!!!!
