South Street Mall and Courts, when will it open?

I have been watching the (non)development of the South Street Mall and Courts during this summer (located at south street and Carolina Street). The courts are done, what seems to be the benches are done, the trees are planted, the only thing missing it seems is the decorative fence by a local artist. Nonetheless the park needs to open soon since it has not been in use all summer when it's most needed by youth in the community. This is especially important now that Curtis Hall has closed for renovations and will be closed for the next 12 months.

I have looked for an update of the status of the park at the city of Boston Department of Parks and Recreation with no success. It really is imperative that we have this space opened up while the weather is still nice and everyone can enjoy the park. Any ideas on how to push for this?

Hi Anna -

The Park will be opening this Monday, Sept. 20th as Jeff Ferris mentioned. The fencing had to be left up until the project got finished which was just this week! I hope you can make it to the opening! Ray

Anna, the park has been in use for weeks by people playing basketball and tennis. I'm not sure why the city has waited so long to take the fences down, particularly since it's completely in the way of people waiting for the bus- insult to injury since the bus shelter is gone and probably won't be coming back.

We got some information from JP Centre/South Main Streets that they heard from the Department of Parks & Recreation and the Mayor's Office that the ribbon cutting will be on September 20 at 4:30 pm.
