Dave I think whole foods is a better fit. The Hi lo smelt like rotting meat. It was like BLDG 19 3/4 selling day old meat. 

I think once Whole foods goes in then a new hip Bela Luna will be able to open and eventually Hyde sq will be hopping again 

and good for the guy selling it is America

I think what is coming to light in this conversation is that different groups have different needs in terms of foods. We is this blog are a small group speaking about the possibility between getting TJ and WF. The fact of the matter is that Whole Foods has not made this official but Hi-Lo is closing.

I am sad because where am I going to find these ingredients:

Banana leaves for tamales

Corn husks for chuchitos

Pan dulce

Queso fresco

Tostadas

Tomatillos to make sauce for enchiladas

Plantains

Maseca (yellow corn flour) to make tortillas

I wonder what the stock people at Whole foods will say when I ask for my banana leaves or corn husks to roll some tamales, hahahaha.

@ Dave I started feeling it when the pupusa guanaca closed down. Oh how I loved that place, plus I always got my food first 'cuase I spoke the lingo :) - (but I get that they tax issues and everyone should pay taxes I'm just saying I miss their food and they had amazing platanos)

Whole Foods. We have a few places here in JP similar to Trader Joe's that do a great job for a fill-in shop for natural and organic products (harvest, city feed). Whole foods would be the only place to do a full shop, plus the only full service butcher and fish store, which I assume they would have.  Maybe someone local could step up and take the space, like a full grocery store version of City Feed. But while Whole Food prices are high, I still think it would be hard for someone local to match them on fresh grocery prices with similar assortment and quality.

I'm very sad for the Hi Lo. This is a significant blow to many of a lower socioeconomic status. Where will people with WIC who rely on Hi Lo go? Where will the thousands of Latinos who have shopped there for so many years go? Where will we get water bread!? Does this exemplify the shift of JP into the New South End™? 

But, since they're going anyway. I vote for a Trader Joes as I think Whole Paycheck is just the pits. :( 

 

Also - to some of the other posters: They're not going out of business for lack of business. They got an "offer they couldn't refuse"... The owners got a huge cash lease offer. That store does TONS of business. I should know, I live next door and see it all day.

I'm a little sad about Hi-Lo since they had unique produce and spices, but it also a store that smells like rancid meat. Multiple times I bought something only to find it to be moldy or expired when I got home. It would have been nice for them to have a well-maintained store with great product all the time, but that really wasn't the case.  Even the positive reviews for it on yelp.com mention these downsides.
