Neighbors,
We just got hit by a spammer who posted crap on members walls. Do not click on any links, send an email, or comply with any requests what so ever. The spammer has been removed from the network.
What is a spammer and what do they want?
- On the Ning platform, which powers this network, spammers are typically automated spam bots that leave comments on members walls. Their hopes are to get your email address and personal information to sell you crap, and some extreme cases, steal your identity.
How I prevent spammers: When signing up...
- I make all members confirm their email addresses
- I make all members fill out a captcha
- I manual review and approve each member
Why did this spammer get through?
- I accidentally approved the profile, on the road this week, have limited time and was rushing. Oops my bad.
How can this be prevented from happening again?
- I need your help reviewing and approving members.
In the last 10 days, we've had 89 new members join. Usually it's about 10 to 20 which is not so bad.
Willing to help? Please leave a comment, and I'll get in touch with you.
Thanks,
Joseph
