Do stuff with and for your neighbors

Hello Neighbors -- I'm considering using Relay Rides to share my car. Has anybody had experience with them? Also, all things considered, I would probably rather have a direct relationship with someone in the neighborhood who needs a car from time to time. Send a message to my Inbox -- Pam Kristan -- and let's talk.  Warm regards, Pam

Hello! I'm the organizer who brought RR to the neighborhood (JP Green House gets a small income stream from them in exchange for promotion.) I'm really excited by the model. I don't own a car anymore and I'm very dependent on Zipcar, which is getting expensive. This could be a lot more practical. But we need more cars out there! So if you aren't using your car much, get in touch with RelayRides (RelayRides.com) and find out about renting (and borrowing) there.

And if you do sign up, please use the code JP1 (that gives us credit). Thanks!

I share my car on Relay Rides.  Here's some thoughts:

The Good

I make money.  In two weeks this month, I've probably made $100 -- and I even have my car at the lowest possible rate.

Warm fuzzy feelings about helping people in my neighborhood live without a car or make the decision to get rid of their car.

When others are driving your car, they are covered by a $1 million insurance policy.  You can't get that if you're just lending your car to a friend or neighbor.

The Bad

One user smoked in my car and left it in a 2 hour parking zone.  They were banned from RelayRides after I reported it, but you're bound to have some stupid people rent your car.

Their original GPS system that emails you where your car is never worked right, so I spent some cold days wandering around the neighborhood looking for it.  Now the devices have been updated, so they work fine.

The Ugly

Speaking of stupid users, one person who rented my car left the key in the ignition.  The engine wasn't on, but it was turned.  It killed the battery in 3 hours and I had to cab it, or rent a relay rides car for a week.  They paid me for my trouble and replaced the battery, but it sucked being without a car for a week.

This looks really cool. I'm gonna join since I hardly use my car anymore. I'll let you know what I think.
