And then there is my experience where I recently have left my $2000 bicycle sitting out on the street for a few days as I had overlooked putting it away in a rush to get to the airport, left various items lying around etc and have never had any trouble, Reason? Six years ago when I first moved into JP Joseph Procelli inspired me to go door to door handing out flyers for Neighbours and Neighbours and got on atleast nodding relations with most of my neighbours. Walking my dog rain or shine also helps break the anonymity of city living. There is an element of bad luck in a city, but we must all do our best and make real effort to make our self as unanonymous as possible. Touch wood but I have never felt unsafe in JP.

I also park on Paul Gore and discovered a completely flat tire on Wednesday morning. It happened sometime between Sunday afternoon and Wednesday morning. The tire could not be repaired because it was slashed on the side....so Katina's comment regarding the slashed Honda caught my eye. Neighbors, I will absolutely call the police and do what I can if I see anyone messing with you, your things, or our neighborhood in general. Let's look out for each other!

I am definitely willing to take part in the door knocking. Paul Gore is obviously a very large street and it would be great if I could find some others to help out but I can definitely do my part. What do we need to do? Thursday-Friday evenings and weekends are easiest for me.

I'm a frequent visitor of this site to see what's going on my neighborhood. It's very distressing to see that about half of all the posts are about crime, and how little or nothing is being done about it. In another thread, about the car break in on Jamaica St, 'Eric' mentioned how concrete steps were being taken to improve the Jackson Square and Egleston Square areas. What exactly is being done? Because, from what I gather, crime is becoming more brazen and violent, just over the past couple of months. A poor economy is not a valid explanation, in my opinion. The kinds of people that would do this would do it anyway. We have drugs, guns, and gangs on the streets. We have parents that don't raise their children with values to respect their neighbors. If we did, this wouldn't be happening. Its very unfortunate that a few individuals can cause such a problem. I know most people in this area are hard working, decent people, and would report crime if they saw it. But the fact that a car can be broken into, a neighbor can notice it and do nothing, is unacceptable, especially given the the regularity of what happens around here. The attitude of our community needs to change. I'd be happy to take part in whatever it takes to do that. I'm getting angry about this...witnessing crime and doing nothing is worse than the crime itself. It implicitly encourages criminals so they just keep doing it. I'm very disappointed in our community these days. It has to be our responsibility. Clearly, we cannot rely on the police to solve this problem; all they can do is respond, we must prevent.

Katina,

There is something we can do, and must keep up. My suggestion would be do organize a door knocking on the street where we give out safety information and speak about the importance of calling 911.

I'd be willing to help pull the materials together and pass them out on Beecher where I live.

We should also invite everyone else on the network to do their streets.

If you're down, BPD will help us gather and print the materials, we just need to be willing to do some of the leg work. I can tell you from past experience this is helpful, and it should be done twice a year as people move, forget, and get complacent.

Thanks for the message Quinn. You're right- there are great people on this street and I think that they are the majority. Unfortnately our car happened to be parked in front of a house where people don't care about our community/safety.

I'm willing to put in some work if we can think of ways to help stop these robberies. The guy that was parked behind us said that his Honda tires were slashed last night because he had locking lug nuts on it and they couldn't steal the tires as easily. It's so unfair that we bust our butts at work every day just to have the few things that we've worked for stolen from us by people who just want to make a quick buck. I'm sick of it. My lease is up in May and I will undoubtedly be moving but I am still willing to try to help make this a better neighborhood for everyone if there's something we can do....

Wow. I'm seriously disappointed in those who stood by while this happened. That is a total outrage. I'm so sorry, Katina. Please know that those crappy neighbors are the exception; I know a bunch of folks on Paul Gore who are good neighbors and would definitely call the police if they heard a ruckus at 2am. I hope we can overcome these violations and love JP again.

Thanks for the response Joseph. There are so many things I love about JP. I lived here about 5 years ago and absolutely fell in love with the neighborhood but the last 4 months have been pretty rough. It's unfortunate. I thought that I would want to buy here after my lease was up but unfortunately I've changed my mind :(

I don't know what to do about the issue of people not calling the police. I hate to think that people just don't care about other people and their belongings. If something seems a little off just call the police!! It's as simple as that...I'm certain that more than one person heard this happen last night.. Oh well......

Katina,

Thanks for posting this. You make a really good point. If we see something, all of us need to call 911. This is ridiculous, and frankly, it pissed me off that people don't. What do you think we can do about this.

PS. JP is wonderful place, it stinks that all this bad stuff has happened to you since you've been here. If I were you though, I'd feel the same way...
