dorothea Keeling left a comment for Big Sister Association of GBSince 1951, Big Sister Association of Greater Boston has been helping girls reach their full potential through positive mentoring relationships with women. Big Sister is the oldest and largest mentoring organization in Greater Boston exclusively serving girls, covering 69 cities, towns and communities. We currently have over 280 girls ready and waiting to be matched with a Big Sister.
Mission:
Big Sister Association of Greater Boston’s mission is to help girls realize their full potential by providing them with positive mentoring relationships with women.
Our vision is to create a mentor-rich community in which every girl has access to the individual nurturing, guidance and support she needs to become a confident, competent and caring adult. Using research-based best practices, we hope to become a national model for gender-specific mentoring for girls which can be replicated in other mentoring programs.
Big Sister is an acknowledged leader in building professionally supported, dynamic relationships between girls and adult women volunteers.
For women 20 and older: This one-to-one mentoring program matches girls (ages 7-15) with women who live in or around their community. Big Sisters spend time with Little Sisters weekly for the first three months and a minimum of twice per month thereafter for at least 12 months.
Matches meet on days and times of their choosing and do activities that they both enjoy, such as playing games, watching movies or riding bikes. They develop a special friendship based on trust and respect as they learn about and from each other!
To apply, visit www.bigsister.org, call 617.236.8060, or email volunteer@bigsister.org.
For women 18 and older: This one-to-one mentoring program matches girls in elementary school with women mentors. Matches meet once a week at the Little Sister’s school or at an after-school site. Weekly visits are 45 minutes to an hour for one academic school year.
School-Based mentors are not teachers or tutors; they are caring and consistent friends. They do arts and crafts, shoot hoops in the gym, read books, or simply share stories over lunch. Each match independently determines how best to spend their time together, and Big Sister staff are always available to provide activity ideas and support.
To view our school sites, and to apply, visit www.bigsister.org, call 617.236.8060, or email volunteer@bigsister.org.
