Safety and Crime Alert

Dear Neighbors,

Over the last seven days there has been a big increase in crime in Jamaica Plain. We need to do some organizing!

Specially, last night there were 5 incidents on and near Boylston Street.

At 6:10 and 6:36 pm on Boylston and Amory and then on Center and Forbes street two our neighbors were robbed. The suspects were described as two slim White Hispanic males in their late teen, one was wearing a red hat and grey hoody and the other had curly hair… Continue

Call 911 to report suspicious behavior

Everyone must call 911 when they see suspicious activity/behavior and or witness a crime - and even if you get away from an attempted crime. The thieves will be waiting for the next person to come along.

Calling 911 provides the Boston Police Department with data to make decisions on about when and where to deploy patrols. It also helps them identify trends.

So what is suspicious activity/behavior and when should you call 911?

Below are some examples. Please… Continue

Help Us Find Peace!

Massachusetts House lawmakers eliminated $3.5 million for a youth violence prevention program operated by the Department of Public Health. Our Supreme Court just ruled that illegal gun possession is a 'passive and victimless' crime. It certainly makes it seem like Massachusetts has finally won the war against youth violence in its communities.

Then a shooting... and another. More deaths. And the realization that our state hasn't won, it has surrendered.

But there are young… Continue

Assaults in the South West Corridor Park. Time to organize!

Neighbors,

In today's (May 15, 2009) Jamaica Plain Gazette, there is an in-depth article titled "Stabbing raises park fears."

In summary, there have been 2 assaults in the South West Corridor Park at 135 Carolina Ave on March 13, 2009 and another on April 21, 2009 by Anson street. Please see the Gazette for details. Both assaults appear to be random and unprovoked.

While I worked for the Boston Police Department from Feb 2006 to September 2008 - the following is… Continue

Neighbors for Neighbors Citywide

Dear Neighbors,

I have some really big news. Given the continued growth of our network and increasing usage (we've now surpassed to 1,000 members), we feel compelled to share our technology with fellow neighborhoods across the city. As our city faces shrinking financial resources, we believe it's our duty to help our fellow neighbors leverage their social capital like we do.

Because of this, on Friday, May 22, (if all goes as planned) there will be 18 Neighbors for… Continue

The Trembling Earth

Like the pains of puberty, spring forms through unexpected fits of growth, regression and awkward spurts of loud weather. The animals must hedge bets on what is coming and how long it will stay.

Warm weather such as the last few days will bring out skunks, oppossoms and even a few rabbits. The skunks and oppossums have been semi- hibernating. The warmth signals their bodies to start bringing their systems online- slowly. It was a long cold winter. Unfortunately, in the early stages,… Continue

Speak Up for the Youth of the Hyde Square Task Force!

An Open Letter to Our Community

Dear Friends,

Facing a budget shortfall of over $3.1 billion, lawmakers in Massachusetts are seeking to close the gap by raising new revenue and cutting spending for many programs.

As youth, we know that these state dollars fund programs that improve our lives.

Cutting these programs will mean less money to prevent and deal with violence in our communities and fewer opportunities for us to receive the mentoring and academic… Continue
