A Con that's happening in JP | "Can you help pay for my car to be towed?"

I have been approached 3 times now by a well-dressed African American woman asking me for money to help her pay for a tow truck because her car broke-down. Each time she claimed that her car was a few blocks away and that she left her little kids in the car. The first time I was approached by her on Centre street across from one of the gas stations. She asked for a specific amount of money,…

At about 5:05pm, on Sunday, February 14, 2010, officers from Area E-13 (Jamaica Plain) were on patrol in the area of 1870 Columbus Ave when a Boston Firefighter exited the firehouse in order to wave the officers down. When the officers came to a stop, the firefighter informed them that an individual, who had been mugged, entered the firehouse after being attacked. Officers spoke to the victim who stated that he was walking along Columbus Ave when two black males approached…

Opportunity for fiber network from google

Hello neighbors!

I am not usually an advocate, but this was something I thought could be a great opportunity for the JP community. Google is going to be setting up high speed test networks and are looking for communities who have an interest in having them come in and work with them. It seems like a great opportunity to have fiber to the home finally -- something that Verizon, RCN and Comcast still are not offering yet.

I am posting this in the hope that others, who have an… Continue

Climate change, the economy and unending war: A new strategy in a time of crisis

Friday, February 5 @ 7:00 PM

First Church Unitarian Universalist, JP

6 Eliot Street

Health care, war, global warming and the economy: These are the greatest problems we're facing today. The media and our elected officials like to portray them as isolated issues, focusing on blame rather than solutions that are in line with a vast majority of Americans.

The Majority Agenda Project, a new Boston-based initiative, views these issues as profoundly intertwined and,… Continue

Also, two more great features on NOFA (Northeast Organic Farming Assoc.) and Mass Local Food Coop.
Thanks, Kyle! We are hooked on your blog.

Live 39 bus route info

Hey JP peeps, turns out the MBTA has been publishing live data (for software developers) on some bus location data for certain routes. One of the routes is the one we all love and hate- the 39.

Check out the T Tracker, which is stunning. There's a live map, a page which will show you the arrival time to the next bus (complete with a link to put all the necessary info in the URL so you can bookmark it!), and even a text-only… Continue

Help Haiti By Helping Your Neighbors

For those of you who live in or near Haitian communities, helping Haiti by helping your neighbors is an obvious way thing to do. But even for the rest of us, there is a way to help out. On NPR, they were saying how relief groups in Haiti were being overrun by volunteers, and that this could do more harm than good in terms of redundant/overlapping services and in terms of diverting resources (food, water, etc.) needed fro Haitians to support the excess volunteers.

What should folks… Continue
