Ballard and Custer Street, surface street/utility work

I write this in an attempt to figure out what to do about the situation in Ballard Street/Custer Street in the JP South Area. I have lived in this part of JP for a bit over 2 years and Ballard street has had regular and constant street work done, to the point that between last summer and just what we have had of this spring/summer there has being at least three instances of work crews working on the…

Your Purpose

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s a question that parents and other adults ask children time and again. We all feel like we are supposed to have a resoundingly clear answer to this question, but in reality many of us still feel like we are trying to hone in on a satisfying answer.

This question can be a good way to “break the ice” with children, and a way to learn something about them. It may be useful to surface desires and…

French Fry is missing from St. Rose Street in JP/Orange male cat

We have not seen our cat French Fry since sometime on Sunday (6/20/10) on St. Rose Street (off of South and Arborway), where we live. He is most likely stuck in someone's garage or basement or shed. He is very curious but cautious when he is outside. I am guessing that he wandered into an open door over the weekend (when everyone does yard work and other outdoor activities) and got trapped inside. Please, everyone, check your… Continue

Looking for volunteers

The JP Farmers' Market located in the Bank of America parking lot would like to provide access to EBT/ Food stamps benefits and grant monies associated with the Boston Bounty Bucks for EBT recipients at the market.

However, because they don't have a market manager, in order to participate they would need help processing EBT cards (almost exactly like a credit card) and end of the day paperwork (20 minutes worth).

Market hours

Tuesdays 12PM -…

JP Community Garden Documentary...

I'm working on a short documentary about JP's Community Gardens, the people who have plots, what they grow and what motivates the whole endeavor. I'd love to speak with a few people who have plots and actively cultivate them.

It will be short, 5-7minutes, but if you're interested I'd love to speak with you about it. Please feel free to contact me at anytime.

Thanks.

Courageous Dialogues: Examining Class in the 21st Century

Courageous Dialogues: Examining Class in the 21st Century

When: Thursday June 17 at 7:00 PM

Where: Where: First Church in Jamaica Plain Unitarian Universalist, 6 Eliot Street, Jamaica Plain

Class impacts our personal identities, our institutions, and our work for social change. In the United States, discussing class issues is taboo; and often more challenging to talk about than race, sexuality and religion. Feelings of shame, and/or guilt at being poorer or richer than… Continue

JP Chapter or Organizing for America recently formed.

Organizing for America, the successor organization to Obama for America, is building on

the movement that elected President Obama by empowering communities across the

country to bring about our agenda of change.

In 2008, millions of Americans got involved in the political process — many for the first time — to fight for a new kind of politics and a better future for…

One of the Break-Ins

Hi everyone,

As you may have read, there has been a spike in home robberies this summer... and sadly, I am one of them. 6 days after my Thule system was completely ripped off of my car (locked and everything on a Sunday afternoon) my apt was robbed in broad daylight. We estimate that the break-in occurred between 9:30am and 12:00pm on Friday.

The reason that I write is this... we have the basic Boylston St windows, older, yet equipped with window 'limiters' that limit how high… Continue

GPS Stolen Sunday from Paul Gore, suspicious teenagers looking into cars midday Monday

My roommate's car was just broken into Sunday between 10am and 2ish pm and the only thing taken was the GPS. Unfortunately she left the holder for it on the window, so that's why they knew to target it. What's crazy is that we've been outside all day, filling a moving truck.

Make sure you don't leave anything in your car to entire passersby, even during broad daylight when people are around. She was parked on the street right in front of the Community Garden close to 52 Paul… Continue

Residential Breaking and Entering

The Hyde Square area has been impacted by a spike in residential breaking and entering. We have increased day time patrols in that area. We have also reviewed the method of entry in each case. About 50% of the B&E's were committed through unlocked windows. The weather has been hot, but please try to remember to secure your windows when leaving for the day. Good neighbors are a great deterence to this type of crime. Call 911 to report suspicious persons. Below are some general…

Looking for an article from the JP Gazette?

My searching has not turned up anything...

I'm looking for an article from the JP Gazette that shared the history of the Southwest Corridor. It was published just before the Wake up The Earth festival, and I read it in hard copy then recycled it. I'm trying to use it for a homework assignment.

Does anyone here know how I could get my hands on that (or a similar) article?

Much obliged,
Kendra
